Gavin Weir from Burnley has completed a solo 500-mile cycle ride from his hometown to Helmond in the Netherlands, raising over two thousand pounds for Casual Minds Matter. The ride, which took place in May 2025, followed the route from East Lancashire through southern England, across the Channel, and through Belgium into the Dutch city that has been twinned with Burnley since 1956.

Weir set an initial fundraising target of one thousand five hundred pounds and surpassed it comfortably, with 93 individual donations totalling two thousand one hundred and seventy-six pounds. The number of individual donations showed how many people in Burnley know what CMM does and want to support it.

The choice of destination was deliberate. Helmond and Burnley share a twinning relationship that dates back nearly seventy years, and Weir wanted the ride to connect that civic history with a cause that is one of the biggest problems in the town. Mental health need in Burnley is acute, with deprivation, economic insecurity, and limited access to NHS services all contributing to demand that outstrips supply.

Dave Burnett, CMM's founder and director, said the fundraiser was another example of the community getting behind the cause. "Gavin did not just raise money. He put Burnley's mental health crisis on the map, literally, across three countries. Every one of those 93 donations represents someone who understands what we are trying to do here. That kind of backing keeps us going."

The funds raised will go directly toward CMM's free counselling and group therapy sessions at 4 Howe Walk in Burnley. The organisation operates without statutory funding, meaning grassroots fundraising efforts like Weir's cycle ride are essential to maintaining services for people in need.
